The Department of "Healthcare Economics" was established in 2003. The heads of the department since its establishment are Prof. Dr. Stefan Gladilov, MD (2003 - 2014), Prof. Dr. Tikhomira Zlatanova, MD (2014 - 2020) and Prof. Nikolay Popov, dm from 2020

The mission of the department is to spread and consolidate the main leading and modern scientific positions in the field of health economics by developing new approaches and methods specific to health care and various forms of training. To create conditions for a thorough understanding and awareness of the economic significance of health care and its close connection with the country's economy.

The main goal of the department is to acquaint the largest possible number of specialists from various medical and non-medical fields of knowledge with the basics of economic science, their application in the field of health care, their role in the successful and efficient management of the main processes and the provision of the necessary funds to finance its activities.

The department offers full-time and part-time student education within the framework of bachelor's and master's programs in "Public Health and Health Management" and "Healthcare Management", bachelor's programs of "Nurse", "Midwife", Physician's Assistant, "Kinesitherapy" ", master's programs in "Strategic management of pharmaceutical activity", "Medical rehabilitation and balneology", "Occupational medicine and work capacity".

The department is a training base for the "Healthcare Economics" and "Medical Informatics and Health Management" specialties. At the moment, 18 specialists are studying in the department, and 164 have successfully acquired a specialty.

There are currently 7 doctoral students enrolled in doctoral studies in the department. 25 dissertations for the educational and scientific degree "Doctor" have been successfully defended.

The members of the department have participated as leading teachers and team members in 27 national and international projects.

The composition of the department includes professors – 4, associate professors – 2, ch. assistants -2 and one assistant. All members of the department have at least one recognized major.
