The new academic year 2024/2025 at Medical University - Sofia was officially opened today with a ceremony in the courtyard of the University's Medical-Biological Complex. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including the Minister of Health, Dr. Galya Kondeva, the Chairman of the Committee on Education and Science of the National Assembly, Assoc. Dr. Silvi Kirilov, MD, the Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Healthcare Professionals (BAPZG) Mrs. Milka Vasileva and directors of university hospitals.
The Faculty of Public Health "Prof. Dr. Ts. Vodenicharov, Ph.D., was well represented at the ceremony, including by the Dean, Prof. Alexandrina Vodenicharov, Ph.D., and other members of the faculty, as well as students, were also present. The vice-rector for academic activities, Prof. Dr. Anzhelika Velkova, greeted the guests, students and teachers and introduced the entire management of MU-Sofia. After that, the rector Prof. Dr. Boycho Lanzhov, MD, addressed the attendees, wishing the freshmen a meaningful, shared and truly motivating time at the university. He encouraged them to stand up for their choice and defend the noble values behind it.
Prof. Lanzhov thanked the teachers for their dedication to the educational process and expressed his belief that everyone will contribute to maintaining the high standards and professionalism inherent in Medical University-Sofia in the new academic year as well.
A congratulatory address was read by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, in which he said:
"Let the beginning of the new academic year give impetus to the Medical University-Sofia's aspiration to achieve significant results in education and research, combining the traditions built here with the innovations of modern medical science."
The freshmen, 1,680 in the Bulgarian study and over 700 in the English-language study, were personally greeted by the Minister of Health, Dr. Galya Kondeva. She emphasized the noble nature of dedication to medicine and how it predetermines a person's entire life.
Associate Professor Silvi Kirilov, MD, also delivered a congratulatory speech, expressing his confidence that the university's academic community will continue to work responsibly and dedicatedly.
Congratulations were also sent on behalf of the President of the Student Council, Dr. Lyudmila Borisova, by Anastasia Barbukova, Secretary General of the Student Council at MU-Sofia.
This year, for the first time, a cash prize of BGN 1,000 was presented for high success upon admission to the Faculty of Medicine from the donation in the name of Dr. Dimitar Goshev. The donor, his daughter Dr. Emilia Gosheva, personally attended the event.
The two freshmen with the highest success - Magdalena Toneva and Georgi Teodosiev - received their award certificates from Prof. Landzhov. Georgi Teodosiev offered congratulations on behalf of the freshmen.
