Prof. Karolina Lubomirova, MD, PhD

Biography:

Prof. Dr. Karolina Lubomirova, MD, graduated from Sofia Medical University in 1998. In the period 1999-2003 is a PhD student in the "Toxicology" laboratory at the National Center of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Nutrition. In 2003 successfully defended a dissertation. Acquired specializations in toxicology (2003), occupational medicine (2009) and health economics (2015) and a second master's degree in health management (2005). Winner of the First Prize of the Ministry of Education and Culture for significant results achieved in the development of a young researcher’s project (2000). Winner of awards from international scientific congresses (1999 Medichem, Prague; 2006 SOT, USA). Acquires Recognized European Registered Toxicologist (ERT).

She did specializations in the Institute of Public Health, Oslo, Norway (2000), Institute of Occupational Health, Lodz, Poland (2000), National Institute of Occupational Medicine, Tokyo, Japan (2006). 

Since 2007 is an associate professor, and since 2013 - a professor at the Faculty of Public Health, MU-Sofia with active participation in the development of programs in the field of occupational medicine, public health and health prevention. 

In the period 2012-2016 and 2020-2024 is a vice-rector for educational activities of MU-Sofia. Since 2016 until 2023 is the deputy dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences for international cooperation.

Head of the Department of Occupational Medicine since 2019. 

Chairman of the state examination commissions for acquiring a specialty in occupational medicine and toxicology. Leader, coordinator and participant in a number of international and national scientific projects: ERASMUS+ PROJECT SPRING, THE INGENIUM EUROPEAN CAMPUS, EUROPEAN HEALTH LITERACY POPULATION SURVEY, EPSILON, EUPHORIC and others.

Winner of the "Panacea" award of MU-Sofia (2016).

Publications and scientific interests:

Author and co-author of over 150 scientific publications in Bulgarian and international journals, textbooks and manuals. Citations in Scopus 56, h-index 3. 

Editor-in-chief of the journal "Occupational Medicine and Workability". 

Member of the editorial board of the journal "Health Policy and Management". 

Membership in organizations:

Member of the executive board of the Association of Schools of Public Health in Europe (ASPHER)- (2018- 2024). National Secretary (2012-2018) and member of the Scientific Committee on Occupational Medicine Training of the International Commission on Occupational Medicine (ICOH). Member of the board of the International Organization of Occupational Medicine MEDICHEM (2008-2012). She is sequentially a secretary, chairman and vice-chairman of the Bulgarian scientific society of Toxicology (2004-present). Member of EUROTOX and IUTOX. Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Academic Society of Occupational Medicine. Member of the National Society for Health Policy and Management and the National Society for Public Health.
