Biography
Assoc. Prof. Nicoleta Stergios Leventi, MD, PhD, MPH, MCT was born in Greece, where she completed her secondary education. In 1995, Dr. Leventi graduated from the Higher Medical Institute - Sofia. She holds a specialty in "Eye Diseases", acquired from the "Papanikolau" Hospital - Thessaloniki, Greece in 2006. In 2015, she completed a certified course at the University of Utrecht - The Netherlands, in the field of Leadership in Healthcare. She obtained a Master's degree in "Health Management" in 2016 from the Medical University - Varna. In 2018, Dr. Leventi participated in the McMaster University seminar on evidence-based clinical practice in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In 2019 defended her dissertation on the "Introduction of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in the education of medical professionals in Bulgaria, opportunities and challenges" and acquired the educational and scientific degree of PhD in "Social Medicine and organization of health and pharmacy". She holds a master's degree in "Clinical Trials Management", since 2020, from the Faculty of Public Health, MU - Sofia, where she defended a thesis on "Innovative information technologies in clinical trials - ethical aspects". In 2021 participated in the summer course "Ethics in the care of people with dementia", organized by the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Law, Leuven - Belgium.
Her professional medical experience began in Greece, in 1996. After acquiring her clinical specialty, she worked as a doctor in her specialty in Greece. In 2014, she registered with the Bulgarian Medical Union. She took up the position of assistant professor in the Department of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in 2016 at the FOZ, MU - Sofia. In 2020, she took up the position of chief assistant professor in the Department of HTA, and from 2025 she took up the position of associate professor at the Faculty of Public Health, MU - Sofia, currently working in the Department of "Social and Preventive Medicine and MBS".
Publications and scientific interests
The main topics of scientific research are related to the ethical aspects of the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, the competencies of healthcare professionals in the AI era, medical ethics, bioethics, EBM, social medicine, clinical trials and the participation of patients and the public in them, as well as his specialty of ophthalmology. She participates in international congresses, symposia, forums and conferences. She is the author and co-author of a number of scientific publications in Bulgaria and abroad, has published one book (2021, ISBN978-619-7452-28-0) on the topic "EBM application in modern medicine and ethical aspects", as well as one monograph (2025, ISBN 978-619-7452-35-8) on the topic "The Digital Doctor: Navigating the Ethical Landscape of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare", both published by the Publishing House of the FPH - Medical University of Sofia.
