Prof. Tihomira Zlatanova, MD, DSc

Biography:

In 2000, Tihomira Zlatanova obtained a Master's Degree from the Faculty of Medicine at MU-Sofia, with the specialty of "master-physician". She obtained a second Master's Degree in Health Management from the Faculty of Public Health at MU-Sofia. From 2001 to 2005 she worked as a coordinating physician at the Center for emergency medical care at Pernik; at the occupational medicine service in Sofia amd as a GP. After winning a contest for a full-time doctorate with the FoPH at MU-Sofia in 2005, she obtained a PhD in the scientific specialty of Social Medicine and Health and Pharmaceutical Organization. Since 2005 she has successively held the following positions: Assistant Professor, Chief Assistant Professor, Associate Professor (2010) and Professor (2014) in the Department of Health Economics at the FoPH at MU-Sofia. Since 2013, for two full terms she was the head of the same Department. 

During the 2016-2020 period she served as Deputy Rector for Educational Activities of MU - Sofia. In 2022, she obtained the scientific degree of "Doctor of Science" after defending her dissertation on "Economic and Social Aspects of Health Disparities in the Context of Covid-19". Prof. Zlatanova has contributed to the development of 6 projects (and lead 2 of them) from the "GRANT" competition. She is a team member of the project BG051PO001-4.3.04-0069, "Introduction of distance learning in public health", under the perational Programme Human Resources Development for the programming period 2007 – 2013 of the EU's ESF. Expert in the project BG05M9OP001-4.001-0019-C01 , Human Resources Development Programme 2014-2020 of the EU's ESF. Reviewed research projects at the Medical Science Council at MU-Sofia. Since February 2025 she has been the Head of the Department of Health Management and Health Economics.

Prof. Dr. Tihomira Zlatanova has recognised specialisations in Health Economics (2004), Social Medicine and Health Management (2015) and General Medicine (2020). She is the Chairperson of the State Examination Committee for the Health Economics specialty. She is specialized in Medical Informatics and Health Management.

Publications and scientific interests:

Prof. T. Zlatanova is the author and co-author of 5 monographs and over 200 publications. She is the advisor of 17 PhD students (15 of whom successfully defended), 30 post-graduate students in the Healthcare Economics specialty. Prof. Zlatanova's scientific publications have over 300 citations. Prof. Zlatanova's h-index is 7. 

Her scientific output is in the area of health economics, health management, financial management in health care, public health, primary outpatient care, socio-economic problems, education, training and information technology in health care.

Membership in organizations:

Prof. Dr. Tihomira Zlatanova is the Chair of the National Association for Health Policy and Management. She was or is a member of: the editorial board of the Health Policy and Management journal until 2024, the Bulgarian Medical Association, the Balkan Medical Union, the Balkan Association of History and Philosophy of Medicine, the European Public Health Association (EUPHA); the European Health Management Association (EHMA), the General Assembly of MU-Sofia, the Academic Council of MU-Sofia.
