Prof. Dr. Tihomira Zlatanova, Ph.D

Biography:

Tihomira Zlatanova graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of MU-Sofia in 2000 with a Master of Medicine degree. She obtained a second Master's degree in "Health Management" at the Faculty of Public Health, MU-Sofia. From 2001 to 2005, she worked successively as a resident physician at the Central Emergency Medical Center in Pernik, in the Occupational Medicine Service in Sofia and in general practice. After winning a competition for full-time doctoral studies at the Faculty of Health, at MU-Sofia in 2005, she obtained the ONS "Doctor" in the scientific specialty "Social Medicine and Organization of Health Care and Pharmacy". From 2005 to the present, she has successively held the following positions: assistant professor, chief assistant professor, associate professor (2010) and professor (2014) in the Department of "Health Care Economics" of the Faculty of Health at MU-Sofia. Since 2013 He was the head of the same department for two full terms. 

During the period 2016 – 2020 she was the Deputy Rector for Academic Affairs of MU-Sofia. In 2022 she obtained the scientific degree of “Doctor of Science” after defending a dissertation on the topic “Economic and Social Aspects of Health Inequalities in the Conditions of Covid-19”. Prof. Zlatanova has contributed to the development of 6 projects (2 of which were supervised) from the GRANT competition. She is a member of the project team BG051PO001-4.3.04-0069 "Implementation of distance learning in public health" under the OP "Human Resources Development" 2007-2013 of the EU ESF. Expert in project BG05M9OP001-4.001-0019-C01 (EPSILON), OP "Human Resources Development" 2014-2020 of the EU ESF. Reviewer of research projects at the Council of Medical Science at MU-Sofia. Since February 2025, he has been the head of the Department of "Health Management and Health Economics". 

Prof. Dr. Tihomira Zlatanova has recognized degrees in: "Healthcare Economics" (2004), "Social Medicine and Health Management" (2015) and "General Medicine" (2020). She is the Chairman of the State Examination Commission for the specialty "Healthcare Economics". She specializes in "Medical Informatics and Health Management".

Publications and scientific interests:

Prof. T. Zlatanova is the author and co-author of 5 monographs and over 200 publications. Scientific supervisor of 17 doctoral students (15 defended), 30 postgraduate students in the specialty "Healthcare Economics". Scientific works of Prof. Zlatanova have over 600 citations. Prof. Zlatanova's Hirsch index is 7. 

The scientific output is in the fields of health economics, health management, financial management in health, public health, first aid, socio-economic problems, education, training and information technology in health.

Membership in organizations:

Prof. Dr. Tihomira Zlatanova is the President of the National Association for Health Policy and Management. She is a member of: the editorial board of the journal "Health Policy and Management" until 2024, Bulgarian Medical Union, "Balkan Medical Union", "Balkan Association of History and Philosophy of medicine", European Public Health Association (EUPHA); European Health Management Association (EHMA), the General Assembly of MU-Sofia, the Academic Council of MU-Sofia.
