Prof. Engr. Nikolay Popov, PhD

Biography:

Professor Nikolay Popova, MD, Engineer - Master's Degree in Forestry at the UoF-Sofia (1999) and a Master's Degree in Public Health and Health Management in MU-Sofia (2002). From 2000-2010 he worked at a leading company in the health insurance market as an information department leader, actuary and a financial director. At 2003, after a contest, he was awarded the possition of Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Economics at the FoPH, MU-Sofia. At 2008, after defending a dissertation on Financial resource Management in Voluntary Health Insurance, he was granted the position of Chief Assistant Professor. At 2010, he's granted the position of Associate Professor by the Higher Attestation Commission and has been a Professor since 2017. Department head (2020-2024). Specialised in Healthcare economics (2013) and Medical Informatics and Health Management (2017). He is the Chair of the State Examination Commission for the Medical Informatics and Health Management specialty.

Publications and scientific interests:

His theoretical and applied scientific activities are focused in the following areas: health insurance; health economics; health management, ICT in education and health care. Authored/co-authored 2 monographs, 4 textbooks, over 130 scientific publications, has over 250 citations in Bulgarian and foreign sources.

He has been the scientific supervisor of 11 PhD students (8 successfully defences), 7 specialised students, 29 postgraduate students, who successfully defended their theses, and has reviewed over 70 theses in the faculty's master's programmes. Supervisor of one and research team member of four "GRANT" MU-Sofia projects. He is a member of the management team of the project BG051PO001-4.3.04-0069 "Implementation of Distance Learning in Public Health" under the Human Resources Development Operational Programme 2007-2013 of the EU's ESF. Expert in the project BG05M9OP001-4.001-0019-C01 , Human Resources Development Programme 2014-2020 of the EU's ESF. Reviewed research projects at the Medical Science Council at MU-Sofia.

He is a member of the Board of the National Association for Health Policy and Management, a member of the Bulgarian Scientific Public Health Association and the Bulgarian Association for Preventive Medicine, the European Public Health Association (EUPHA); the European Health Management Association (EHMA), the General Assembly of the Medical University of Sofia.
