Assistant Professor Doncho Barbalov, MD

Biography

Doncho Barbalov was born in Sofia. He completed his secondary education at a language school with English as the main language in 1985. In 1992 he obtained a master's degree from the Technical University in Sofia. In 2006 he completed a master's degree in business administration - financial profile at City University, Seattle.

In 2018, he obtained a Master's degree in Public Health and Health Management at the Bulgarian Institute of Health "Prof. Dr. Tsekomir Vodenicharov, MD". In 2020, he obtained an educational and scientific degree "Doctor" in the scientific specialty "Social Medicine and Organization of Healthcare and Pharmacy" based on a successfully defended dissertation. The dissertation is on the topic "Economic Aspects in the Creation and Development of Long-Term Care Facilities Supported by the Public Sector".

In the period 1996-2011. Doncho Barbalov worked in a number of international institutions including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank. In the period 2011-2023. he was Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality for Finance, and in the period 2015-2023. he was also Deputy Mayor for Health. Since the end of 2023. he has been a member of the Management Board of the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund.

After winning a competition in 2024, he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of "Health Management and Health Economics" at the Faculty of Public Health "Prof. Dr. Tsekomir Vodenicharov, MD".

He lectures to postgraduate students on the topic of financing hospital care and, in particular, public medical facilities.
