Assoc. Prof. Petar Ignatov, PhD

Biography:

Graduated from the Medical University (MU) in Sofia.

Obtained a specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology at MU Sofia.

In 2012, after successfully defending a dissertation on "Contemporary Cardiotocography in Pregnancy and Labor – Quantitative Cardiotocography" before the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Medical University, Sofia, he was awarded the academic degree Doctor of Medicine (Ph.D.).

He has obtained postgraduate qualifications in Fetal Medicine, Echocardiography, Doppler Ultrasound, Cardiotocography, and Invasive Fetal Surgery in England, France, and Germany.

Since 2013, he has been a licensed researcher of the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) at King's College London, UK, specializing in combined screening for chromosomal abnormalities and Doppler ultrasound.

Since 2020, he has been an Assistant Professor, and since 2021, an Associate Professor at the Department of Healthcare, Faculty of Public Health, Medical University – Sofia.

He has received postgraduate training in Medical Genetics and Immunology at Harvard University, Boston, USA.

In 2024, he obtained a Diploma in Fetal Medicine from the University of Barcelona, Spain.

He is a lecturer and organizer of postgraduate training courses in the field of fetal medicine, obstetrics, and gynecology.

He is the author of the MIS–CARE project (Markers of Ultrasound, Immunologic & Serum Factors in the Comprehensive Analysis of the Risks for Early Pregnancy Loss) – a web-based interface that calculates the risk of miscarriage based on blood tests and ultrasound indicators (www.mis-care.com).

In 2016, he founded the Orthogyn Medical and Dental Center, where he is the head of the fetal medicine and surveillance of high-risk pregnancies sectors.

In 2023, he established the Science and Innovation Foundation – a non-profit organization aimed at supporting clinical research, training, postgraduate qualification, specialization, and other activities related to the academic development of young scientists (www.innoscience.bg).

In 2024, he was elected President of the Bulgarian Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (BFAG) (www.bfag.bg).

Publications and scientific interests:

He is the author of one monography and three patents:

• DDA (Diastolic Deceleration Area) – a new Doppler indicator for determining the condition of the fetus in the third trimester of pregnancy,
• QSL Protocol (Quantitative Surveillance of Labor) and QDSP Protocol (Quantitative cardiotocography & Doppler Surveillance of Pregnancy),

He is the author and co-author of over 70 publications, plenary lectures, conference presentations, and posters in international and national scientific journals. 

His work has been cited over 100 times, including in Cochrane Collaboration, Lancet, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and others.
