MAYOR OF SOFIA YORDANKA FANDAKOVA BECAME DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSE OF MU-SOFIA

At a solemn ceremony, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova was awarded the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" by the Medical University - Sofia.

The Rector of MU-Sofia, Prof. Dr. Viktor Zlatkov, announced the reasons for presenting this high distinction, emphasizing Ms. Fandakova's contribution to the implementation of an active, effective and sustainable policy in the field of municipal healthcare, which implements a long-term successful strategy for the development of the capital's municipal medical institutions in hospital and outpatient care, school healthcare, as well as initiatives for health promotion among the residents of the city of Sofia. The other reasons are:

Support and assistance for the implementation of the Sofia Municipality Program for financial assistance to healthcare professionals majoring in Nursing, studying at the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University - Sofia.

Using the expert support of FOH-Sofia to develop the direction of "Green System, Ecology and Land Use", related to air problems in the city of Sofia.

The active participation of the Sofia Municipality together with the Sofia Medical Center in the implementation of projects providing bioethics training in schools.

The honorary badges - a badge, a plaque and a papyrus - were presented by the Chairman of the General Assembly of MU-Sofia, Prof. Gencho Nachev, the Rector, Prof. Viktor Zlatkov, and the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Prof. Tsekomir Vodenicharov, at whose suggestion the mayor of the capital municipality was awarded the high distinction.

During the ceremony in the auditorium of the "Mother's Home", Fandakova noted that the title is an honor for her. She also emphasized that for her, prevention and prophylaxis in healthcare are a cause. She reminded that the Sofia Municipality has created five prevention programs. They are for the prevention of diseases such as breast cancer, myoma, lung diseases, and prostate. It is extremely important for the Sofia Municipality to have well-prepared people in the healthcare system, said Ms. Fandakova. "Last year, we established a program to provide scholarships to students majoring in "Nursing" at the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University and the first approved ones are about to receive their awards. This year, we will also include the Medical College in the program, so that we can encourage and support more students," the mayor of Sofia specified.
